A Notary Public is a neutral third party commissioned as a verifier, authenticator, impartial agent for the state, public recorder of acts, and unbiased official witness for the signing of important documents.

The State of Texas Government Code Ann. § 406.024 governs the maximum fees for notary public services (a complete list of notary fees is in the table below).

For notarizing a document, the cost is $10 for the first signature of one signer and $1 for each additional signer/signature.

A convenience fee is also added based on the distance to your chosen meeting spot.

All signers must present non-expired government-issued (federal or state) IDs that contain a photograph and signature of the bearer:

• State-issued driver's license

• State-issued identification card

• U.S. passport issued by the U.S. Department of State

• U.S. military ID (please note that CAC Cards without signature are not acceptable ID for notarizations in Texas)

• State, county, and local government IDs

• Permanent resident card issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Please note that the list provided below is not exhaustive. There may be other forms of identification not accepted for notarization in Texas:

• Expired IDs: IDs that have been expired for a significant amount of time.

• Temporary IDs: Paper or temporary IDs that lack security features of official IDs.

• Foreign IDs not recognized by Texas: Some foreign national IDs may not be accepted unless they are recognized and verifiable (like some passports).

• Student IDs: IDs issued by educational institutions often lack the necessary security features.

• Birth certificates: While they prove identity, they do not include a photo or signature.

• Social Security cards: Lack both a photograph and physical description.

• Credit cards and bank cards: Even though they might contain a signature, they lack a photograph and are not issued by a government agency.

• Club or membership IDs: Generally lack the necessary security and verification standards.

• Library cards: Do not meet the criteria for government-issued photo identification.

A recordable document is one that is recorded with an entity, whether it be the secretary of state's office, a court of law, a county clerk, or the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Certified copies may be obtained by contacting the recording entity.

A non-recordable document is one that has not been nor will ever be recorded with any entity. For instance, a letter is not recorded with anyone, but there are times when the sender would like to obtain a certified copy of that letter for his or her file.

No, notarization does not verify the accuracy or legality of a document's content. The role of a Notary Public is to authenticate the identity of the individuals signing the document. Responsibility for the document's content lies with the signer(s).
